Interesting Stuff

It’s easy to spot revolutions or major events in the past. The shrinking of computer parts in the 70s, the PC revolution of the 80s that led to the internet explosion of the 90s, etc. The latest ‘big thing’ has been the socializing of the Internet. We now find sites like Digg, reddit, and Del.icio.us. But here's what needs to be next:

After installing the Samsung Linux printer drivers of April 2007, many applications, like OpenOffice.org, open themselves with root permissions.The link (sorry it's french) shows that the installation script replaces some applications with a setuid script ! Zero Install is a way to run software without an explicit installation step. This is easier (install and run becomes just run) and safer (installation doesn't happen as root).

Just outside of Seattle, WA my roommate Ed recently took a photo of this . . . thing. We have no idea what animal this is but it was seemingly deaf and/or dumb as Ed got extremely close to it before it slunk away. There are two tufts of hair on it but, otherwise, it was completely bald. Any thoughts? Your help is appreciated!

The Denso SARD Supra HV-R, a retired 480-horsepower Super GT car converted to run as a hybrid with regenerative braking, in-wheel-motors in front, and a larger electric motor for the rear wheels, has won the Tokachi 24-hour race. It's the first win of its type for a hybrid vehicle. The Supra completed 616 laps -- 19 more than the second-place car.
